Procedure Overview
Preoperative Evaluation: Before undergoing limb lengthening surgery, patients undergo a comprehensive preoperative evaluation, including medical history review, physical examination, and imaging studies (X-rays, CT scans) to assess the extent of limb discrepancy and plan the surgical approach.
Surgical Procedure: Limb lengthening surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. The surgical procedure involves making precise cuts (osteotomies) in the bone at the desired lengthening site and attaching an external or internal fixation device to gradually separate the bone fragments. Over several weeks to months, the fixation device is adjusted to gradually lengthen the bone, allowing new bone tissue to fill in the gap created by the distraction. Once the desired length is achieved, the fixation device is removed, and the bone is allowed to heal.
Postoperative Recovery: After limb lengthening surgery, patients undergo a period of rehabilitation and physical therapy to regain strength, mobility, and function in the lengthened limb. Regular follow-up appointments with the orthopedic surgeon are scheduled to monitor bone healing and assess progress.
